Red Roses for Meghan: A Pre-Valentine's Day Visit to Edinburgh!

On the eve of Valentine's Day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle carried out their first official visit to Scotland, with several engagements in Edinburgh.

The appearance comes after it was revealed last night Meghan has been carrying out a series of under the radar charity visits around the UK since the engagement announcement. The Mirror reports "Meghan has visited the Grenfell Tower site alone to comfort victims of the inferno. Prince Harry ’s fiancee has twice been to comfort those affected by the inferno that left 71 people dead and a community shattered. The actress appeared at the Al Manaar community mosque, which lies in the shadow of the charred shell of Grenfell Tower at North Kensington, West London. It is understood the US actress arrived without Harry but was flanked by a royal protection officer and one of the prince’s aides. A leading Grenfell community member said: “Meghan’s visits mean so much to us. She has a special place in our hearts.” A royal source added: “Ms Markle has regularly been making private visits to organisations as she gets to know the charity sector."

Today's visit was very much planned around "the opportunity to meet members of the public, learn more about organisations that work in the local community and nationwide, and celebrate youth".

The day kicked off with a walkabout.

Meghan was in her element chatting to well wishers.

Meghan told members of the crowd it's her first visit to Scotland. She thinks Edinburgh is "gorgeous".

Over 2,000 locals waited for hours to see the couple.

Red roses for Meghan.

Chat turned to their stag and hen parties. More from People:

'During the couple’s first joint visit to Scotland on Tuesday, Meghan was asked about her upcoming bachelorette bash. And while she doesn’t know all the details her friends have planned for her, it “is sorted,” she told a crowd of eager well-wishers in Edinburgh.
“We asked them what they were doing for their stag and hen dos,” Tom Martin, 30, who is visiting the Scottish city from London, tells PEOPLE. “Meghan said, ‘I’m not sure — it’s sorted but it will be fun.’ As for Harry, he said he’s also being kept in the dark on specific plans. “I’m sure William’s got something up his sleeve,” Martin said.'

It was a fantastic welcome.

Harry and Meghan's first stop was at the Esplanade in front of the iconic Edinburgh Castle, where they were officially welcomed to the city by the Royal Marines Scotland Band.

Prince Harry became Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Marines in December 2017, succeeding his grandfather, Prince Philip in the role.

The couple were greeted by the mascot of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, Shetland pony Cruachan.

Like Meghan, Cruachan was sporting tartan for the day :)

The pony gave Prince Harry a nip much to Meghan's amusement.

The Telegraph reports:

'As the Prince attempted to give the pony a pat, the disgruntled animal gave him what looked like a sharp nip. Ms Markle was seen laughing as Prince Harry shouted "hey!"
It transpired Cruachan has form for causing mischief at royal events. The nine-year-old pony famously tried to eat the Queen's posy during the monarch's visit to Stirling castle. Its handlers told the Press Association he was on his best behaviour today — but Cruachan's actions said otherwise. Pony Major Mark Wilkinson, who introduced Cruachan to the Royals, said: "They were asking about him saying he's a wee star, he knows he's on parade and is showing off - they said it was lovely to meet him."

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD). There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century. It was recently voted the top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. The most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War.

The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O'Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

The magnificent Great Hall.

Inside the castle, at the historic Edinburgh Garrison, which looks out across the city, Prince Harry and Ms Markle observed the firing of the One O'Clock Gun.

The tradition of firing a gun started in 1861 to mark time for ships in the Firth of Forth. Today the British Army fire a 105 millimetre L118 Light Gun, which is the model currently used in operations worldwide.

The gun is fired at 1 pm every day except Sundays, Christmas Day or Good Friday, with crowds gathering to enjoy the spectacle.

Take a look at the spectacular view.

Next, Harry and Meghan travelled on to their second engagement of the day.

They visited Social Bite, a social business and café located in Edinburgh's New Town.

Social Bite runs social enterprise cafés throughout Scotland and use this platform to distribute 100,000 items of food and hot drinks to homeless people each year, as well as employing staff who have experienced homelessness themselves.

In the café, Harry and Meghan learned more about the social enterprise and met staff.

Hannah Furness reports Meghan had a latte and discussed her experiences volunteering at a soup kitchen. She added giving homeless people choice in what they eat is key to "dignity and humanity". Hannah added "Basically, if you think the homeless are being swept off the streets of Windsor for the royal wedding in their name, you’re going to be sorely disappointed".

A short video from the conversation.

They also toured the kitchen.

Back to The Telegraph's story:

'Ms Markle revealed she would like to work in a cafe after visiting local enterprise Social Bite, telling kitchen workers it looked like "fun."
Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio stopped for lunch at Social Bite venture Home in Edinburgh's west end in November 2016 while the Duchess of Cornwall and George Clooney have been to Social Bite's Rose Street branch. Prince Harry asked the co-founders of Social Bite: "When are you bringing this down south?"

Co-founder Alice Thompson told Meghan she was "deeply inspired" by her 2015 UN Women speech. Clearly touched, Meghan thanked and hugged her.

To conclude their visit, they attended a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse to celebrate youth achievements, marking Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018.

Prince Harry’s royal standard was raised at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The Year of Young People is an initiative that aims to inspire Scotland through its youth: celebrating their achievements, strengthening their voice on social issues and creating new opportunities for them to shine. Youth representatives from various charities and organisations that work with and for young people across the country were present, and the reception provided an opportunity for them to talk about their aspirations for the year and the activities that they have been involved in so far.

The couple chat with guests.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the Monarchy in Scotland. Founded as a monastery in 1128 at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, the Palace has a close association with the History of Scotland. Today, the Palace is a close focus for national celebrations and events in Scotland, most notably The Queen's ‘Holyrood Week’, which usually runs from the end of June to the beginning of July every year.

A video of the reception including footage of Harry and Meghan meeting First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Before the couple left, Kensington Palace tweeted "This was Ms. Markle's first visit to Scotland, and she is very much looking forward to returning many times again in the future."

We saw several nods to Scotland in Meghan's choice of clothing and accessories today. She chose Burberry's stylish Double-breasted tartan wool and cashmere-blend coat for the visit (with thanks to Meghan's Fashion). The navy and dark green garment retails for $2,895 at Net-A-Porter. The choice of tartan was a very nice tribute to the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Meghan has been a devoted fan of the British fashion house for years.

More from the product description:

'Burberry's tartan coat is part of Christopher Bailey's latest shoppable runway collection - it shot straight to the top of our wish list the moment we saw it at the show. Made in Italy, it's tailored from navy and dark-green wool and cashmere-blend and has structured shoulders.'

A closer look at the tartan.

Meghan wore the Veronica Beard Adley Trousers. The $395 wide leg pair feature pearl-like buttons and faux pockets. They are available in limited sizes at Veronica Beard (Take 15% off your first order by signing up for the newsletter) and ShopBop.

Launched in the fall of 2010 by sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard, Veronica Beard strikes an easy balance between classic and cool. Meghan has been wearing their designs for years.

And her Wolford Portland turtleneck.

Meghan carried the East/West Mini Bag in bottle green by Scottish brand Strathberry (with thanks to Meghan's Mirror).

The piece is described as "Effortlessly elegant and timeless, the East/West Mini is defined by structured, clean lines and the iconic Strathberry bar closure. Featuring two compartments with one interior pocket, Strathberry branded hardware and a dual length chain shoulder strap. Made in Spain using the finest calf leather and microfiber lining with a suede like finish."

You may recall Meghan carried the Strathberry Midi Tote for her first engagement in Nottingham. At the time, the brand said: "It was a fantastic surprise to see that Meghan selected one of our core Strathberry styles to carry on her first royal engagement. We are delighted at the news of her and Harry’s engagement and wish them all the best for this exciting period."

Meghan accessorised with several stackable rings including her Birks Yellow Gold and Diamond Ring and their $5000 Rose Gold and Diamond Snowflake Ring. What Meghan Wore notes Meghan also wore her Missoma Interstellar Ring.

The Canadian jeweller confirmed via Instagram.

Another great day for the pair!

I expect Harry has something very romantic in store for Valentine's Day tomorrow :)

  1. Ha! No messy bung + a tartan coat!! Still very dark, though, I would have loved a splash of colour - like the "Edinburgh tartan" which is a lovely blue or the "Edinburg district tartan" which contains red stripes...

    1. I was hit by how Much Color this was for Megan. Compared to what she's chosen to wear so far, this is Color & Pattern! :) lol Seriously tho, I think these types of conservative steps into color, is what we will see more of from Meghan. She seems to favor the darker end of the color wheel & neutrals. I'm thinking for the warmer weather, we will see more navy, white & neutrals etc. I do not think we will see much in the way of pastels. Just a hunch, but who knows? I believe she has a base color (black for Winter/Fall) upon which she expands, adding color from there. For Summer/Spring, I have a feeling we will see a base of White/Cream, upon which she can add Navy or the scope of natural neutrals (i.e. beiges) & browns. As I'm trying to get a sense of her taste, these are my thoughts. :)

    2. If you look at photos of her on Pinterest etc., it seems she does wear prints & colors for summer, so I bet we'll see more color then. You are right, though, generally it looks like she favors the neutral darks & lights. I think though, once she's more comfortable with her role & is exposed to what the other royal women wear, she'll incorporate more color. =)

  3. I´ve already wondered during the visit to Cardiff - maybe it´s intentional that´s she´s wearing such "dark" clothes - as she´s very hard to spot from further away while she´s doing the walkabout (watch the videos, you really have to make an extra effort to spot her!)? Call me paranoid, but as we were able to see last weekend, there are lunatics out there, you wouldn´t believe it..... :-((

    4. @Imke, possible threats by terrorists, racists, and other lunatics...it´s more difficult to aim at someone if they are clothed in colours that make them "melt with the crowd" (i.e. NOT stand out), just as an example...

      Delete
    5. @Kadry, some sad human being who´s actually "running for office" in the US, posted a very despicable "photo-shopped" version of one of Harry and Meghan´s photos at their first photo-call on the day of their engagement (the one taken out in the white garden at KP). He combined it with what he calls a "joke", but it was just disgusting and disrespectful. After a huge outcry from the public, Twitter finally closed his account. It was no death threat, but it showed that racism of the worst kind is still very much alive - and not just by the usual "trolls" you might want to "laugh off" because they´re ranting about something all the time anyway. This guy wants to become a Member of Congress....
So if hate and disrespect are so openly and unashamedly shown (from what I´ve heard, the Daily M(F)ail and other tabloid commenters have really said horrible things, too), you must security-wise hope for the best - and prepare for the worst. (this has gotten longer than planned, but I hope it clarifies things for you, Kadry! :-) ).

I was so appalled to see that tweet. The level of disrespect & just lack of human decency....so shameful. Thankfully Twitter permanently suspended his account.

Meghan looks lovely! Those slacks are classic with a fun twist in those pearl buttons. I also love that she had a latte!!

Though I think Cruachan the Shetland stole the show ;-)

  5. A nod to Scotland with the plaid, and no hand holding, she’s getting braver on her own. Will they receive a Scottish title too, I wonder. Then she’ll have a tartan.

  7. Meghan looks absolutely beautiful. A place, time and people-she had arrived! What looks close to military style coat complements Harry’s military status. The cross body bag is a simplified class act elegance, and well-coordinated with her tartan designed coat. The darker color of the coat must have met her taste for darker shades of coats for the winter. She did it in perfection without standing out too much in bright color.

    1. Anon 15, I agree with you, she looks beautiful! I´m biased about the dark colours, on the on hand it suits her SO well, I just wish I could wear them, it´s very chic and effortless looking, on the other, it´s probably my usual mid-February "winter blues" - "Can it please be OVER, N O W!" - which gives me this craving for colours that are a little bit brighter.... Other people have "November blues" - when I am blissfully happy - I have "mid-February blues", like the rest of my family, btw!! Funny, isn´t it?
The cross body bag leaves her with two "free hands" - so she can shake hands AND take flowers/presents, etc... Clever girl, our Meghan, right? ;-)))) It´s this kind of - shall I call it "mindfulness"? - that I love about her....

    2. The coat is darker in a subtly blending ways especially w/o bright light on it and a on a gloomy day. For a first time diplomatic dressing as a new visitor, I think, it blended nicely with the hosts tartan colors without standing out. In a way it reminded me of Kate’s green on St. Patrick days. Kate is already an official after marriage. I think considering, the darker shade is an excellent compromise here.

If February is gloomy as in some parts of USA, I know what you mean.

When I noticed the awaiting crowd holding several union flags almost without exception, I knew the high light may not be Scotland’s blue, or have a mix of Edinburgh tartan. The only site of Scotland’s blue and white was on the flag pole curled in the state of the temperature in a steel photography.

  8. I love this coat and her whole look. I also commend her for sticking to her simple, classic style which means her outfit doesn't become the main focus of the day. I'm sure there will be some who will grumble she's wearing pants and all-black again but she looks modern and chic.

    1. Me too! I like her style and her public persona very much. Proud as an American for all I believe she will bring to the BRF. Harry chose well.

      Delete
    2. She has a very city-girl style, doesn't she? The preference for pants, minimal but layered jewelry, tons of black, a mostly neutral palette, and the "pop" in her outfits comes from proportion and texture rather than color. I'm totally into it.

      Delete
    3. I like her style too. I would totally wear this, and I adore the bag.

But what I like more is her ease in meeting people and willingness to participate. She is doing a great job so far.

  9. Initial reaction / love the coat and purse. Dislike the look of those wide dress trousers that she favors peeking out below the gorgeous coat. They distract from the beautiful coat and swamp her petite frame. I am not looking for Kate’s coiffed hairstyles, but her hair looks unkempt and messy. Stuart Witzman boots or booties in black and a skirt and turtleneck would have been a divine compliment to that awesome coat.

    1. Completely agree, more tailored pants like the ones from the McQueen suit (I believe) would have complimented the coat better.

      Delete
    2. Is she really petite? I hear she is 5"7'. I am that height and considered tall. So confused by this. Keep hearing that she is petite?

      Delete
    3. Completely agree, also. I love this coat, glad it’s not black. And I love Meghan’s warmth and genuineness with people. But her pants are way too long and look sloppy. It’s not that hard to get a needle and thread and hem your pants an inch. Don’t know why she would wear a stiletto heel under these pants. Agree a high, chunky heeled boot would be better. And as my mother used to say, “Do something with that hair!”

      Delete
    4. The bottom I noticed, and blamed it more on the rainy road taking away the look ( well they are long pants even with heels). Once they are inside and after taking off the coat, it may work out right for what she planned.

All the photos are nice except the very top one exposes the state of her hair against the climate.

      Delete
    5. Love the coat and purse. The trousers on own are nice but with the length and slim profile of the coat the wide pants look a bit off.

      Delete
    6. I too love the coat and cross body bag. Meghan's purse collection is divine! The long flair pants seem to be popular. I've seen a lot of that look during New York Fashion week. I am not a fan. The extra material looks cumbersome.

I would love to see a side part in her hair. She looks very chic in photos when she has this style. I think a repeated issue for both Meghan and Kate is the distracting hair in their faces and their constant need to brush it away. It's not as easy to style long hair in inclimate weather. Maybe a low ponytail swept to one side and a side part would be a lovely option.

Charlotte, I so enjoy reading about the rich history and background information related to these appearances. Thank you for providing it!

      Delete
    7. Third photo from their back is added as they moved around.

The cut of the coat seems to hug her legs right below the knees (fine the coat has its own beautiful life), and then the size, style and length of the pants may not have been comlementary. Well details for a busy lady? / isn't that what stylists and assistants are for?

      Delete
    8. I like the all black look, I think it's very classic without looking dated. I also like the wide leg trousers, but she needs to have them hemmed a bit. They were either too long or resting low on her hips. The coat though. I like the plaid nod, but I always dislike long coats like this. I never find them flattering and with the wide leg pants, I feel like it just looks like too much.

I did like her hair. It was down and loose, but I also felt like it was styled.

      Delete
    9. "her hair looks unkempt and messy"

Hardly so, her natural hair is very different. She definitely styles her hair all the time.

MD: I'm so glad you pointed this out (and am quickly tiring of hear it). I completely agree. If people are waiting to see glossy barrel curls or a bouncy ponytail like Kate, it is not going to happen. Meghan is stunning and seems so confident in her natural beauty. Different people, different styles, different hair texture, different ideas of "working" persona and relating to the public. They both are defining their own roles and there is room for all!

      Delete
    11. Petite can also refer to overall frame of a person. Someone can be short but 'built big' and not really seem to be petite. Conversely, someone like Meghan, who isn't short, but has a slender frame, can be considered petite and dainty. I think that is what people mean when they call her 'petite'.

      Delete
    12. Meghan is confident and stunning but, I think, if she was completely confident in her natural beauty she would not be straightening her hair. Like Kate, Meghan does not have stick straight haur.

      Delete
    13. I mean this in the gentlest way possible, but can we take care in how we talk about her hair, particularly in terms of texture and straightening? It's often not a neutral subject for women of color.

      Delete
    14. The definition of Petite, I believe, is that you are short. Slender, or skinny tall people are not considered petite. The petite section in stores is for short people, roughly under 5’3” or so.
That being said, I agree the pants, although I love the style, look too big on Meghan, they sort of hang like pajama pants.

    15. Is it racist to say straight hair is not natural for women of color?

      Delete
    16. MD and Emmaline in the US I’m in complete agreement about the hair. She wears it up people criticize, she wears it down people criticize again. She can’t win so she may as well continue to do as she’s been doing. She knows what works for her. I just wonder if people realize how much history there is with black women and their hair. There’s more to it than just what it looks like. There’s a lot of history there going back to slavery times. Black woman hair is wrapped up with identity, too much blackness, too much whiteness, not enough of either, etc etc. There’s been books written about this subject and I just caution people who are critique happy about Meghan’s hair. Particularly white women criticizing it, it’s probably a floodgate you don’t want to open. Just my 2 cents.

Now as to the post. Thank you Charlotte for providing such detail. Very informative as always :) I put my money on her wearing a skitt and I would’ve lost LOL. Oh well she still looked lovely and I’m sure there’s plenty of skirts and dresses in her future so maybe she’s just squeezing in as many trousers as she can before the wedding :)

    17. Erika I have to admit being a bit taken aback by that myself and agree with verandah.
With that logic one could be critical of any bit of personal care or grooming by a man or a woman.
I feel I am a confident, mature woman. I dye my hair, use hair products, and wear make-up. Most women groom or style themselves in some way, even a pared down minimal look requires effort these days!
And most men do the same.
I don't expect Kate (or any woman) to walk out with her hair as it looks after nothing but a wash and air dry, and no reason Meghan should either. No reflection on her confidence at all.

      Delete
    18. Erika, every person does something to themselves to create the 'beauty' they desire. Some people dye, cut, blow dry or straighten their hair using chemical or mechanical methods. Some people wear wigs, weaves or wiglets...I say "do you". Every body who practices good hygiene perform unnatural methods they deem beautiful to themselves (I shave my natural underarm & leg hairs...while one of my friends doesn't)...Meghan's hair & mine are very similar (every hair type is unique to the individual) so I sympathize with her. The fact that she processes her hair it is her choice & is no reflection of her confidence. Some people like their hair straight so they relax, use a Brazilian blowout or straighten with a brush & blow dryer...while others who like curls use rollers or pressers or perms...I think both Meghan & Kate are beautiful confident women who choose hair styles they like rather than leave their hair in its natural state.

      Delete
    19. Anonymous, as a lady who envies the beauty of both Meghan’s and Kate’s hair, I think the issue of management and style in their respective professional capacities is quite similar. I have boringly, I’m sure, stated in my comments regarding this post that there are styles for both ladies that suit their preferences while keeping them from constantly touching and moving their hair from their faces. I don’t see differences- rather I see similarities with Meghan and Kate. Goodness, who would want to be preoccupied with a hairstyle instead of focusing on the events that they are attending!

      Delete
    20. I don’t think so, Erika. :) At least I would hope not.

It would be so fun and so nice if we could send Meghan a big card that said “Ignore the haters. We love you. Here’s about 500? hugs.”
(How could we do that? Seriously.)

      Delete
    21. @Erika - My comment wasn't directed at you in particular but at this thread generally. I'm not calling anyone a racist (sigh); I said that this is not a neutral topic. There is often enormous social and professional pressure on women of color to straighten their hair, with real consequences way, way beyond what I as a curly-haired white woman have ever or will ever experience. As Roxana said, there is a long history there and I think it's important to be aware of and sensitive to that.

      Delete
    22. What I said, I would say about anyone of any race. I married into a Lebanese family in which the women constantly straighten their hair. I would call that not their natural state either and would say that if they wanted their natural beauty to shine, they shouldn't straighten it. I didn't say she wasn't confident. I said we can't call straightened hair her natural state. I have said that about Kate before too and no one chided me. Its suddenly a negative comnent when about Meghan? I would say that about any women who has changed their " natural state" for an unnatural state or one they were not born with. It has nothing to do with grooming or style etc. I truly do not know how to navigate this blog, so not going to try anymore. I look at Meghan the same way I look at Kate or anyone else. I feel like I shouldn't have to comb my comments for probable offense and word things differently just because of her heritage. If I talk about her differently, isn't that a form of racism itself?

      Delete
    23. So Erika I don't think you did anything intentionally, but comments on straightening our hair is a loaded thing to black women. "If you're so proud of being black why do you straighten your hair to look white" stupid things like that. And for me and others you see that and go whoa and your defenses go up. Especially when you never hear it said about all a white woman does to her hair, "why doesn't she go natural" So I don't think it's bad for all to think more before they say things. Not altering your comments. Just think from the other side for a minute. And if something's pointed out just say ok I learned something here and keep on. I married a hispanic man and we both had to navigate new things and sensitivities in our families. But we're learning! And it's all good. It's a melting pot, we listen then understand.

      Delete
    24. Erika, acknowledging that someone's heritage is different from someone of another race is a sing of respect. Not racism.

There are black women who get fired from their job and expelled from school because they kept their natural hair. They get critcize for wearing their natural hair, for wearing braids and straightened them. Thé heck with that.

      Delete
    25. Actually, petite can mean either short or having a dainty or delicate frame. While Meghan is not short, she does have a dainty frame.

      Delete
    26. Erika, I hope you keep navigating. You made a comment about her hair, which can be a very fraught topic among women of color.

If you remember back to when there was another racially charged situation, Finn used an example of how her best friend and she were playing one day and her best friend's mother asked Finn's mother if she was going to do something about Finn's hair, and used a descriptor (which I can't remember) for it. They both had pony tails that day. The only difference was that Finn is biracial, and her friend is white and had smooth straight hair. Finn was left feeling like there was something wrong with hers and her friend's hair was somehow better.

God knows I put my foot in it all the time, and I've apologized more times than I can count. You haven't even put your foot in it, and sometimes we don't know how other people perceive things we say. Truly, if we don't understand where people are coming from we'll never learn, right?

    27. Ugh Erika.. I hear you. FWIW I totally understand where you are coming from. It's really tricky to navigate this blog in particular because there so many new names we haven't had before and they all come with their own set ideas of acceptability.
I really hope that we can trust each other and not try to police each other's comments for non-existent racial bias/insensitivity.

    28. Erika, for what it's worth I do understand where you're coming from. You said the girl is stunning and you made a reference to a personal preference she appears to have in common with Kate. I, too, recall many threads devoted to the subject of royal haircare over the years and very recently there was a lengthy debate about support and undergarments. Tricky navigation indeed. ☺

    2. No, me neither but I do like her slacks and top sans coat. Probably, I would like the coat styled differently with slimmer tousers and a different shoe. Together, Meghan's slacks and coat look slouchy and boxy. Love the green bag just not sure how I feel about that degree of casualness for a royal engagement. The stackable rings are gorgeous. No earrings today?

  14. We are all waiting to see some colour on Meghan, but I do happen to love this coat. My father served in WWII and this was the tartan of his regiment. It is a subdued with the dark colours. Meghan is so warm and friendly. She obviously loves people. Her hair looks better than when in the messy bun, but she still has to keep pushing it off her face. I wonder if she will come up with a solution of what to do with her hair?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hmm...Kate for years has pushed her hair off her face! Its common for long hair to tuck behind the ear or not.
Currently the "look" is to not tuck as we often see on Kate. About the color, we who live in major metropolitan cities in the USA rarely wear bright color. Meghan has said in the past her style is classic, neutral and simple.
I believe it will be a long time if we ever see Meghan dressed in English flowers and prints. Although lovely, it is not an American fashion style. Perhaps come spring and summer you may see the color you are looking for. Kate seems to take her fashion instincts from the Queen's dressing style. I think that is what people are use to seeing. It is not an American style of dress with color from head to toe. Meghans wonderful sincere smile says it all.

    2. USA Granny-I agree regarding your comments regarding both Meghan and Kate’s hairstyles. Please refer to my comments above. But I think that both Meghan and Kate have found hairstyles that do not distract, stay manageable and fashionable whatever the event. And other times their hair tresses tend to require constant touching to keep in place. I think all ladies want to wear hairstyles that highlight their individual beauty. But any style that interfers with their face requires adjustments, especially in those ladies who are constantly in the public eye in a professional capacity.

  15. This look is certainly Victoria Beckham inspired. Victoria has the attitude to pull it off though. Meg not so much.

Also my favorite actress had been wearing this coat for the last few months and I never knew who made it. Now I know. Thanks Charlotte

  16. Charlotte,
You can’t be thanked enough for your dedication to the MAM and HRHD blogs of your very own ways of writing well researched summary of history as the pair of couples continue in their journeys.

“The gun is fired at 1:00 pm every day except Sundays, Christmas Day or Good Friday, with crowds gathering to enjoy the spectacle.”

The observance of the three special Christian holidays is truly considerate. On the liter side, it is an awakening moment for people who live in the area (may be it is an alternative to an alarm clock if they take a nap in the middle of the day). “Let us meet at the firing time” (understood to be 1:00 pm). Where were you when the incident happened and what time was it? “I don’t remember but, it was a few minutes after the gun firing”. “I take it to mean before 1:30 pm”? “Yes your honor, before 2:00pm”.

  17. Ugh if only this coat were tailored! The rest of the outfit is really fun and fresh and her hair looks lovely, but the coat just looks unkempt. I realize that is how Burberry designed it, but it doesn't work in a professional setting. The tartan is great, but it still needs to fit!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Man, she is just so cool and chic. My ONLY complaint is the length of her pants. I suppose if they were just going to be indoors it wouldn't be an issue, but they really seem to be dragging on the concrete and I'm sure getting quite damp on the bottom. Other than that though, the coat, the casually slung cross body bag. Her style is just on fleek and really making it so much fun to follow the royals!!

    1. I get this but I am not sure it works. The oversized coat and trousers. It does look a little messy and I would love if she had worn navy or green , instead of black, and slimmer trousers.I do love the way she is doing her own thing, she is not being dictated by the normal Royal look, and she is keeping things very understated, attention is not really on her clothes but its focused on them as a couple and the day itself.

They are so obviously enjoying themselves and subverting all the so-called royal rules. It is a refreshing change to most royal visits which can be very stiff sometimes. She shakes hands with people before Harry does and he just goes along with it. If the rumoured Royal etiquette classes have taken place, they have had no effect! On the other hand Meghan has clearly taken on board Kate's custom of including clothing with a local flavour which is a very thoughtful gesture.I am so looking forward to seeing her wedding dress. The racist comments mentioned by some are appalling. How can people be so rude and hurtful! An interracial marriage is quite usual these days.In my own country it is so usual that people don't even comment. The gene combination in the next generation will be interesting. (Maybe the baldness gene might be eradicated!)

      Delete
    3. Just a little note as I keep reading it over and over again: styling yourself with a gesture to the host is something every royal lady is doing and wether special to Kate nor was it invented by her. That is just how they roll, good PR and kinda expected. And I say this as someone who generally likes Kate. There is no need to make out things that are easily spotted to be false.

  20. Harry always has taken great photos with kids and animals. I noticed in the photos and videos that Meghan kept her hands well away from the tartan-matching pony, which turned out to be smart -- that cutie tried to bite Harry!!! I like the tartan coat, don't mind the wide leg of the trouser, but agree they should have been hemmed. Seeing the top of the pants, I am only so-so on the pearly embellishment, but I think this is her winter working vibe -- dark separates. I am all for it.

    1. This over-sized coat look is trending everywhere in Tokyo this winter. It's in all the top-tier fashion houses and filters down to the lower end options as well. What sort of shelf-life it will have, who knows? However, since all her coats have had that vibe, it seems that Meghan is bang on or somewhat ahead of the trend in the UK and North America.

I for one hope that Meghan doesn't get into the English penchant for flowers and prints. With the exception of some of Catherine's sheath dresses with floral accents, nothing says matronly or elderly faster. That detail is best reserved for cushions.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you Philly - this "oversize" look is perfectly on trend. It's so refreshing to have a royal who doesn't dress like the Queen! She looks fantastic. As much as I enjoy Kate's clothes, I hope Meghan stays far far away from florals, bright colours, and coat dresses!

      Delete
    3. I think if we see Meghan in florals, it will be something very subtle, like a navy sweater with some cream or contrasting blue flowers or floral design around the neck or waist. But not all over and not a bold bright color.

      Delete
    4. Philly is right and I think the fashion houses are falling over themselves right now trying to get their collections to this new royal bride. I suspect Meghan may also have Diana's wisdom to tailor her "trendier" items so they work again in future.

I understand some concern that she's been too casual, but I think you have to look at the schedule today and at previous engagements. She can't be dolled up like a princess in a fitted dress or skirt talking to people about the homeless. That would be inappropriate and tone deaf.

And from the little we've seen, and news of her visit to Grenfell, Meghan is anything but tone deaf. She's very in touch with public mood in my mind.

  22. Sigh. Black wide leg pants and a black turtleneck. It's so boring.

The pants are too long, the coat needs to be tailored, and while she looks great, she's missing some polish. She looks like an LA girl still. This is her job now, and she needs to look the part. No matter what people wish to be true, appearance matters and matters a lot, especially if you're marrying into royalty.

I am just not impressed with what she wears. I'm just not. She seems lovely and personable, is absolutely beautiful and Harry looks over the moon, but she wore nicer things working red carpets. She wants to rock dress pants? Awesome. Get them tailored. All black works well in most professions (I am currently wearing all navy at work today) but not every time.

I realize I am in the minority here, but I am just not impressed.

    3. She actually looks quite professional, modern, and stylish. Though I do wish the coat was not so big/baggy on her. I don’t know, so far her fashion is so aspirational and relatable to me (in the sense that I can copy her style with less expensive versions of course). This is what I like about Meghan.

      Delete
    4. I also feel her look was very in polished today. Another oversized coat that swamps her. Those trousers might be cool on a night out but not for this ki d of event. I also feel she needs to tidy up her hair especially when she is going on a walkabout in windy Edinburgh. While I'm on I really feel Harry looks a mess. He's not a college student, he's a visiting dignatory and if his hosts are dressed up to meet him it is respectful to wear a suit and tie. This casual trend of Harry's is poor form. I might come across as old fashioned but I believe it's very important to dress appropriately for the occasion.

  23. An addition to my earlier post where I referred to Meghan as “petite”. Very true that at 5’7” she is not considered short or truly petite. She does hav fine bones and a slim frame, but I confess my term petite is probably in comparison to Kate. My bad for making a subconscious comparison🙂

  25. I like the pieces she wore but probably more as separates, with some tailoring. The coat is nice but seems a tad too big on her. While I love a cross body bag this one pulls on the lapels of the coat so it doesn't lay as nice as it could. The pants are a tad too long. I know that's the look but on a rainy day you're just going to end up with wet, trodden hems. In some of the pics it looks like they're actually frayed. I also think a sleek, low ponytail would look great. Turtlenecks and ponytails look great together.

    1. I agree some tailoring is needed. Her looks always come off as sloppy. Dark colors yet again, and pants.

    2. The cross body bag is elegant without being functional for enough items. I did not think a cross body bag of especially high quality will puff up that much after you put items in it. I have the similar idea and size of a cross body bag in three sections detached from the bottom as shown here. May be the advantage in mine is the center part is with a clasp allowing deep space for several items, and the left and right sides are zippers, still allowing enough space for flat items.

  28. Call me old fashioned...BUT ; )
I would have loved to see a nice dress (maybe a casual sweater dress) and lovely boots under a brighter coat. Just a little too much oversized dark material weighing down her frame. All of these are personal choices, I understand, but in my opinion, the look is simply too casual for her role. Expensive, but insufficient for the occasion.

    1. YES!!! It's stylish, and modern and all of that, but not enough. She very much isn't dressing for her role. I know it seems she doesn't want to be a fashion plate, but you don't have to be to look dressed up for your role.

    2. Senorita Dee, what should she wear?

Princess Anne is one of my favourite royals...she is a hard worker & the last time I checked she rewears clothes that most fashion people wouldn't give a second glance...she has kept the same hairstyle for years, but I don't care because she works hard.

I think Meghan dresses for her role quite well...her style & mine differ but she is presentable. I think Meghan is trying really hard to win the support of the British people through her deeds not her apparel. In fairness to her most of the events she has attended have been informal & involve young people.

    3. I don't have a problem with the pieces, per se. It's her, I get it. But the pants are too long, the coat (while I understand its meant to be like that) swallows her. It's like she's got all the right outfit pieces, but not quite there. All black is just boring to me. And I KNOW... she's all about her work and perhaps doesn't want to be known for what she wears, but the reality is, people are ALWAYS going to look at what she wears. And for better or for worse (I think it's terrible) she is ALWAYS going to be compared to Kate. Especially when they start going to the same functions. I'm in NO way saying she should look like Kate. Meghan has her own style. But so far, I haven't seen the chic, stylish, modern, amazing style everyone here seems to be raving about. She's just wearing really expensive clothes. (For the record, I sometimes look at what Kate wears, and I'm equally underwhelmed or flabbergasted, just so no one thinks I'm only here to bash Meghan.)

I understand my opinion isn't popular. I LOVED her engagement dress. LOVED the black suit she wore at the last outing, but not the blouse she wore with it. I just think she's missing some pizzazz and polish. That's all.

Did seem like the pants' hems were taking a beating, but I loved it all. Even though we are used to black, she keeps looking terrific in it. She seems so petite, probably because Harry (and Kate and William) are taller, and even with high heels, Meghan is much shorter than Harry. And she's so trim! It looked rainy and chilly and I bet that coat felt good. Harry looked great, too! Wonderful trip and photos and background information, as always. Thanks!

  34. An interesting thing about fashion and style trends is updating our eyes to 'see' them. How often have we seen a new cut and thought 'um, not working', then two years later we re-view and go 'excellent - just right!'. Currently the trend for clothing is moving toward an oversize silhouette (hello 80's!).
Meghan is wearing her usual classics with a slight cutting edge and newer silhouette; new cut for coat, fuller-leg trousers, etc. Two years from now we'll look at this and think it's perfect. Right now, it's an adjustment for our eyes.
Love that she is staying true to her classic style w/an edge, staying on (or ahead) of trend and being subtlety chic in the process. Well-done!

    1. I'm pretty sure that in two years I will think her pants from today are horrid. She is overwhelmed in a coat that doesn't fit well and is too long to be wearing wide legged pants with. Add that to the bottoms of them dragging on the ground and getting wet...

    2. The bedraggled hems are unfortunate. I think the longer length and type of material did her in in the rain. So many considerations in how to dress when one is in the public eye like this.

That way the stylist can focus on the event variables (and there are many as you said), and Meghan can focus on her chatible endeavors more.
Whether anyone agrees or not, public image in the form of how one dresses is important. Diana knew that for sure. And she utilized it powerfully in gaining as much influence and leverage as she could to help in a myriad of ways to advance her philanthropic help and influence.

Becca USA, They could be on the cover of a romance novel. :) I think MM does what she likes, feels comfortable wearing, and suits her body---one of my favorite outfits that Kate wore was that lovely lavender form-fitting dress. She looked incredible. That is not MM, it seems. I think her spring/summer outfits will be light and breezy and appropriate for the weather. Her hair is gorgeous and may not follow what we are used to seeing in "royal" hair. And the pants were designed to float around the bottom of the shoe as shown above so that's probably why she didn't shorten the. As far as the black, well she does it well! 41. Judging from pictures of Megan pre-Harry, long, tailored, unfitted "overcoats" have long been part of Meghan's personal style. Perhaps it is a result of her living in Canada for the last five years. I read one commenter who pointed out that Meghan is wearing coats as a coat, and not as an "outfit" which is what British royal women seem to do. Today's tartan coat is a style of coat based on men's overcoats and is not meant to look fitted or be close to the body. Perhaps that is why there are so many calls for Meghan to get her coats properly tailored, or to wear coats that fit rather than overwhelm her. We are also used to seeing Kate wear many fitted coats with princess or empire silhouettes and dropping just to the knee in length. Those appear to be not Meghan's style. To my eyes, Meghan's coat fits her as it should for the style that it is. I don't think I've seen Meghan in a "fitted" coat. She seems to prefer a straighter line. Also, her style is very much a contrast to Kate's. I think it is wonderful that these two women each have their own distinctive, but equally great style.

    1. Exactly - Kate wears a lot of coat-dresses, whereas Meghan's are mostly top coats. They both fit exactly as intended and ARE tailored, but even though we're calling both "coats" we're really looking at two different things.

    2. Anon@17:31 and verandah@19:43,

I hope everyone who complains about the coat not being tailored, read your comments. I had been lost what they mean by that. A coat is a coat as in an overcoat Meghan is wearing here, and it comes in different styles and should not neccessarily be "fitted" and "tailored" to my knowledge.

      Delete
    3. Personally, I just think her coats are too big. It is 100% her style and has been for awhile though. I am rarely ever a fan of the midcalf or longer length coats. But, when they are combined with wide lapels and just a broader overall cut, I feel like they swamp the wearer. Her engagement coat did not overwhelm her and her Christmas coat was just on the far side of the line but not as badly as today's did. Her coat from Wales was great.

  42. A great classic look for today and the tartan print, Black Watch, is a sweet nod to her future FIL, who is the Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. And gosh, I want these pants (properly hemmed of course), the pearl accents really pop!!

My only piece of advise for Meghan would be to be more mindful of her posture. She tends to walk with her head down, shoulders hunched and head jutting forward. I'd love to see her with her head up, shoulders back and chin tucked back (slightly).

  48. Hannah Furness also noted that "if you think the homeless are going to be swept away for the wedding in their name you'll be sorely disappointed".

I am struck by how well suited Meghan will be for her new job. She has the right personality and understanding. The ease with which she spoke to people, admiring a young girl's manicure, talking about wedding plans, chatting with people from Canada... Harry was right when he said he fell in love with her, then couldn't believe his good luck that she was someone who would be perfect for his unusual life.

Then her conversation about the importance of soup kitchens, and how to structure them so they treat the homeless with dignity was just fantastic. This is a thoughtful, purposeful woman. And she seems intent on doing whatever she can to use her new position to bring attention to important issues.

So I think most Brits don't care what she wears to a degree, they want to see what she *does*, what she's capable of, how she represents the UK, how she connects to the public and more importantly the public mood.

She gets top marks so far, and she hasn't even walked down the aisle yet. Well done Meghan.

It just makes Meghan Increasingly Amazing! I Literally feel like She could have been Hand Picked by Diana! Diana would have known exactly who Harry needed as a True Love & Compassionate Philanthropic Partner! :) xoxo

    2. That's why I love reading your comments here Claudia and thank you for that.

We get lost so easily in what she is wearing and how straight or curly her hair is, and while I love discussing fashion, and she needs to dress the part but at the end of the day what is more important: her hair or her words/actions. I was stunned to see a young woman on Twitter at Social Bite, she is in her twenties and homeless. One thing which I can't process right now to be honest. Your comments give us all a reality check really.

    3. Agree 100%. I´m sure the people at "Social Bite" and the young people at Holyrood were nervous and apprehensive enough as it is - the way she dresses might be unusual for royal ladies, but I very much get the impression that she want to get in touch with the people she meets, she wants to know about them, about the cause, very "hands-on". She puts people at ease - that´s just her natural gift and it´s a useful one in her future role! IMHO, she dresses accordingly, which is great. With her attitude and how she goes about this, any charity must LOVE to have her as patron!

But what's important is she's taking it all seriously. I hope she keeps it up because I think she's done great so far.

    5. Agree with you, Claudia. Meghan certainly looks polished and chic, yet you can tell that it's not her main focus. She truly wants to understand and be involved in the work. I admire that greatly and think Harry found the perfect person to share his role.

  49. I have been waiting and watching to form an opinion of Meghan. And with each outing it gets more and more solidified. I think that Meghan is as she appears - a person with a social conscience, feminist views, thought and intellect in her mind. She is not here to become a fashion-plate. That much is ABUNDANTLY clear in her clothing choices and BRAVO for that. BRA-FREAKING -VO for that. Her dark outfits, steadfastly clinging to a non-froo-froo color palate, no fussy prints, wishy washy blow-in-the-wind skirts.. all of this just shows she is serious about HER WORK. NOT about what she is wearing.
Here she is : a woman who has earned a living, knows what it is like to have autonomy and agency and is not here to be taken care of - rather someone who will be doing the taking care of. And god knows we need more of these women in the world today.
I don't want to compare people but honestly the emphasis placed on royal outfits has always made me uncomfortable. That doesn't mean I don't like oggling at them and then going out and buying the same.. but nevertheless, is this how real women are in real life? Going from outfit to outfit? Do our lives revolve around clothes ? NO. Our lives revolve around people, work, glory etc. etc.. and clothes are a part of that. It seems to me that for royal women (and not just in the BRF) clothes ARE supposed to be the woman. Hilary Mantel said something to this effect - it is all about dressing the mannequins. And here we have Meghan who is refusing to be one. The only other person who is as confident in refusing to capitulate is Victoria of Sweden. She just doesn't give two damns.

It is 2017 folks. Praise this, embrace this.. teach your daughters to emulate this. Nice frocks are nice. But that is all.

    2. It is possible to love clothes and still be a feminist. It is also possible to be about your work and still look polished. Women who like clothes aren't without social conscience, feminist views, thought and intellect.

It is also perfectly ok to be a woman who wants to be taken care of. Why does it have to be all or nothing?

      Delete
    3. But why does it have to be the first and only comment? It happens with kate too, from her most die hard fans. I for one am sick of it, can we talk about more than what they're wearing? It's fine to admire it or comment on it, but that's all it is any more. Both of these women, ALL women deserve more than being picked apart like this for their looks. I hate it.

    4. I think some people (me) have extremely stressful lives and come here (and DKB) for a bit of escape. It doesn't mean we only value women for what they wear, that we aren't feminists or we are shallow. For me, I want to come here to oogle clothes and jewelry, and leave the seriousness of the world at the door. I like that Charlotte has always maintained that her blogs are a place for those who enjoy more weighty discourse as well as those who are here for the clothing and lifestyle.

    5. Amen, Senorita Dee. Women are certainly multi-faceted. Being taken care of doesn’t mean being oppressed or in bondage nor does it mean bring ineffectual. Men love to protect and provide. It is in their strange Martian genetic make-up, and I like it. :)

    6. Rosman:) *slow clapping it out*. Well said. I think you’re exactly right. The work is the emphasis for her. The clothing is secondary. We all know she can dress well and appreciates fashion. All you have to do is look her up pre-engagement to see all her red carpet looks. This woman knows how to dress and dress well. But she making a deliberate choice to keep her look neutral and serious during these engagements. I certainly can’t pretend I know why or what her reasons are but I’m sure in time they’ll become clear. I much rather she be a woman of substance first and a fashion plate second than a fashion icon with no substance. And yes I’m well aware women can be both fashionable WITH substance. (i.e Meghan herself :)) all I’m saying is she’s entering a whole new world where the vast majority of people hadn’t ever heard of her before November 27th and she’s going about introducing herself a certain way. Ok I’m going to stop here because this reply got way longer than I anticipated. :)

I'm sorry Rosman if I am mistaking your words but being femminine and loving femmenine colors or prints does not make women less serious about what they do. I understand what you are trying tosay but I think that the premise is wrong ;)

    8. I agree Sylvia, and I would add that to achieve this look, she definitively thinks about clothes. Some may think it unpolished but there have been enough posters to comment how on trend and fashion forward her look is. IMO she is serious about clothes. Don't tell a Parisian that wearing black and being minimalist means you don't care about clothes.
She very much cares, IMO. I know women ( I'm not one of them, I love clothes) which don't think about their clothes, because what they are or do is more important, they don't dress like that. At all.

      Delete
    9. Ladies. I love clothes (most of the time) and I am a feminist. I did not say anywhere that liking clothes and oggling over them and buying them is anti-feminist or stupid or anything.
However, at work do you want to be known as WHAT YOU WEAR ? Or do you want to be known for what you have delivered ?
This is Meghan's work... it is OUR playscape - we come here to escape our stress and to oggle over princess clothes and jewelry but it is Meghan's work. There is a difference between how we perceive what she is doing vs. the way she does. At WORK she is making a statement that she wants to limit her clothing to what she thinks is professional. I am like that too. I love dresses, I love fun flirty jewelry and sure I wear them to work occasionally. But mostly I am in suits and boring navy dresses with boring navy or grey bags. Because I don't want clothes to be the topic of discussion.
Do I want to be known as the woman who wears fun clothes or as the woman who knows how to deliver ? That is where I was coming from.
Some women, however, manage to be both. I actually know some very shark-like bankers who can power dress the *heck* out of a suit with bangles and large statement earrings, but at the same time run circles around other bankers. I am not one of them.. I need to dress to blend when I have important stuff going on.. I suspect Meghan is like that.
So yes, Sylvia - to answer your question - one can wear lovely dresses to work and be great but it's rare. At least in the line of work I do.

    11. I am adding- hopefully a reality check on some of Rosman’s comments. Isn’t one of the benefits to the UK financially and promotionally, the wardrobe and lifestyle of significant royal ladies? The fact that fashion items sell out when certain royal ladies wear them- especially the younger generations- the Kate effect as an example. Many people in the UK justify the purpose of royalty partially on this I basis; although it may not be easily measured - for example- the British tourist industry. There is an economic piece here ladies. And there is a cost/benefit that UK royalty enjoy on behalf of many opinions. I do believe, in my humble opinion, that both Kate and now Meghan, are not only marrying not just gentlemen, but also a job/career that requires that one show up and be willing and qualified to accept these apparent responsibilities. That is quite a powerful role for any women to play as part of the monarchy!

The irony for me, and Charlotte please correct me, is that the commentary that champions more feminist views, are accepting of historical status and financial benefits that many consider obsolete in a modern world. Ironic, perhaps. For me your blog transcends a lot of nonsense. As I have stated before, your blog provides historical perspective, highlights current events and does an excellent job balancing fashion.

I hope commentary continues in this vein.

    12. Love your view, Rosman, that it's intrinsically more important for a woman to be known for what she does than for what she wears. But I also agree with others who have pointed out that for the BRF, boosting British fashion designers is one of the jobs, so wearing/carrying them and getting their inventories sold out is serious business too. I myself love the subdued color palette that Meghan has chosen to wear in these visits so far. I won't complain if she adopts a light summer dress come July though.

The Queen is a good example of a woman who has achieved an almost perfect balance. She IS known for what she wears, but it is a very close second-place behind what she does, which is a pretty amazing job when you start breaking it down piece by piece. The seriousness of her job does not suffer the least bit of detraction because she wears florals and lace and so on. Same goes for Anne. She can wear anything (and she does) and be taken seriously. If Catherine, once her children are all in school, steps up her game enough to be taken seriously, it will end up the same for her. Meghan has started out very well; we'll see how she goes on.

    13. English Rose, I am yet to see anything even remotely convincing on the royal family's value addition to tourism (in fact there are significant points to be made that they are the opposite - they are a drain on tourism) or impact on fashion. The numbers you get on "Kate effect" are myths - most of what Kate wears are past season or was already sold out or running very very low when they were identified. Over the past few years she has exclusively worn clothes that are in the four figures. Most of us don't buy clothes that expensive. The whole Kate effect myth was created by DM as clickbait. Yes, earlier, in 2011-12 there were a few pieces that she wore that did create a spike in demand, but those were few and can be counted off hand. And I am as guilty as others of going out and buying what she wore - but this was ages ago.

The job/career aspect of a royal lies in what they DO not what they wear. That is true for all humans, except models. Most jobs entail doing something, not just wearing something. Whenever we add the dimension of clothes/fashion to judge a woman, we reduce her. Is that what they are doing to the men ? No. Were Phillip/Charles/ William ever judged on what they wear? No. Yes, I am also guilty of oggling over fashion and do follow royals in part because of the clothes. However, I realize what I am doing and am careful to protect my own image/reputation in the workplace. If Meghan wants to stand apart and do the same I completely respect that. I will not complain that I am not getting pretty frocks.
Besides, what she wears is so up my alley I love it !

    14. rosman, I choose to both wear fantastic clothes and do fantastic work. They are certainly not mutually exclusive or even rare, for that matter!

I love reading Charlottes blogs but am so tired of the fighting! Some people prefer to look at the clothing, others, at the work and some enjoy both. I think there’s more than enough room for all of us!

You do you, rosman, but let others do themselves too!

  50. WOW! Love those trousers. Veronica Beard's designs are so simple yet chic. The camel coat I own from her collection has gotten me a lot of compliments! And, this ensemble is absolutely gorgeous on Meghan. That Burberry coat is just perfect, too. I thought Meghan would go for tartan outerwear as a nod to Scotland and then couple that with some black pieces and it looks like she did just that. The bag adds a pop of elegance too! They just look so cozy together sitting in the booth of that cafe, don't they?! The hair was fab, too. She looks great with her rosy makeup and piece-y tousled locks! Harry's looking mighty fine too! This was an all-round great day in Scotland for the both of them!

  51. The coat is lovely, although it seems to overwhelm her a bit. The trousers are awful--too much volume and too long. I love the bag but not worn cross-body, as the proportions are awkward. Looks much better when she's carrying it over her right shoulder. Overall it is not working for me, although she looks relaxed and happy.

  56. Love the Tartan coat in a nod to Scotland, however, the fit was all wrong - too big and boxy for Meghan. The trousers are beautiful and I love the pearl buttons. Like others, I think the pants were way too long - even IF that is suppose to be the style. They could have been shortened a bit and still kept the wide leg trouser look intact. The 'black turtleneck and black trouser' uniform is growing a bit old for me. I also would have loved to see Meghan wear her hair pulled back in a classic ponytail, which would have complimented the overall look.

Good that she has the fortitude to show up in the face of apparent threats. Kudos Meghan and hugs.

Love the coat. Tartan, yay. British brand, yay.
Not liking the pants with the coat. Always love a black turtleneck. Love the purse. Green, yay. Scottish brand, yay.

So far Meghan has $7,500+ in stack rings, almost $9,000 in earrings, plus the bracelet from her first outing with Harry. A nice jewelry wardrobe so far. Most of it can be casual or dressy. I love that.
Nice purse wardrobe so far also.
She is, in general, building a wardrobe of classics. Investment pieces. Quality. Effortless chic. Hopefully we’ll see a lot of those pieces again (and again).

Loved the ever-so-nicely dressed, cheeky pony. :)

Hope their bachelor and hen parties somehow incorporate charity somehow rather the being some sort of seedy affair that some of those kind of parties can be.

  59. I like that Meghan isn’t all about the colours. But I have some problems with today’s look. There is no denying that Meghan’s outfit is trendy. But crop tops are too and she wouldn’t wear those would she. Being on trend does not equal a good look. The coat has a bad length and you can clearly see that her trousers got soaked at least 10cm up in the back. They are just too long for a walk outside. No one can tell me they didn’t know about the weather. That is called bad preparations. The look might work inside without the coat but it really should all the time. Her nice attitude makes up for it but I really want her to ace the dressing department too. The wet trousers with the thin heels look very displaced in the weather and action.
I am all for pants though. In times were a majority of women (not all of course) wear pants on a daily basis it is nice to see it reflected in monarchies as well.

    2. Kiwi, I agree. I get the style but for me personally, the long coat with the bell-bottom long pants just seem sloppy. With those pants, you need a short jacket to look sharp. I was glad she didn’t do the messy bun, but this style just seems too casual as well. She needs to let go of her California Casual and step it up. Finally, the incessant hand-holding is getting ridiculous. Actors are known to be insecure but this is just too clingy. It’s like the handshakes interrupt their holding hands and that is not how it should be. They are working and should be more professional. I keep hoping things will change but they don’t seem too. It makes me nervous because they are even more casual and down to earth than Will and Kate. Too me that is dangerous - if they are so much like us, what makes them royal? That’s what makes the Queen so fabulous. She is not like us and you would never forget it. But the younger crowd is, so when they take over what’s the point of the BRF? Who are we to aspire to in behavior, dress, attitude, respect, etc if they are the same as us?

  62. I just get such a good feeling from Meghan as I watch her at engagements and read about her covert charity work/research. I feel that she really is up to the task, serious about the work, and genuinely enjoys the work. She's solid. I know mistakes will be made, as nobody is perfect, but as others have said, Meghan is so suited for this role.

She wears the clothes, they don't wear her. I like that she looks polished, yet comfortable. The tartan was the perfect bit of color and sartorial nod for her visit today. And while I don't like the bulky coat paired with the wide-legged trousers (those pants, by the way, are amazing!!), I do think she looks on trend and comfortable in her own skin.

Meghan does seem to be gaining confidence on her own, doesn't she? Although, I'll never be upset to see their affection. I'm hoping for more and more engagements with these two. It's just so fun watching them interact with the people.

  63. I LOVE Meghan! However, in my opinion the individual pieces are wonderful but the look just does not come together. I am surprised by the way she has been dressing based on her pre-engagement style. I feel like she was swallowed up today- coat was way too big, pants way too long, you can even see how the bottoms are getting ruined by dragging on the ground. As much as I personally love black, I think she needs to venture away from it (at least some of the time). I would like to see her up her wardrobe.

  64. 19:15. About the pants and coat. Often when someone wears a wide-legged pant like that a shorter coat is worn for better design balance. Better proportion. Like a business-dressy pea-coat length and type of coat. Or a cute waist-length coat.
Anyone know what I’m talking about? 😳

And perhaps the really thin-heeled shoe looks a little too skinny to be paired with a wide-legged pant. Looks weird to me. It is all about scale, proportion and balance. If you are going to invest in clothes it is a good idea to think about these things. :)

    1. Balance is the key here: the dragging hem and stiletto heel disrupt an otherwise stunning outfit that was perfect for the variety of activities they undertook today. I don’t think the coat is too boxy or long from the front, but some princess seams or a fitted element would have improved the look from the rear.

  69. One last comment from me about today and I’ll shut up:) I just saw a photo of Queen Letizia wearing a pair of black wide leg trousers to an event (today? Yesterday? I don’t know) but I think that just shows that it’s a very on trend item. Whether or not people like them is a matter of personal taste. I’m not sure I like them myself. But I am reminded of when skinny jeans, skinny pants came into the picture. I was not a fan. They grew on me. I suspect the same will happen with these and when I, and others, who aren’t fans of these pants will feel differently a year from now. Or maybe not because again, personal taste. :)

  72. I get the impression that Meghan is trying to make the focus not on what she wears, but rather on the charities and organizations she's come out to support. She seems to have, therefore, adapted a bit of a"uniform" based on her own personal style, which is pretty classic. She makes me think of Audrey or Katherine Hepburn. These are all events pre-marriage, when she is not yet a royal. I'm sure she doesn't want to leave the dominant impression that she is a great clothes horse. The queen's style is to wear bright colours so that she can be easily picked out in a crowd, but she doesn't really vary the style of what she wears. She is consistent, and has established certain expectations of how she looks when "on duty." Perhaps, later, Meghan may sometimes appear in something that will knock our socks off, fashion-wise, but now is not the time to do it, imo.

  73. I think that Meghan's wardrobe choices signal that she is here to work, to listen and to learn. I'm not worried about the lack of color or wearing pants. 75. I find the all black clothing worn by women in the bigger cities to be depressing , always have. I do see the point in having an easy go-to work uniform. 76. At times we have found Kate's clothes overly conservative, with no wow factor. But Kate's outfits are rocking fashion, compared to "let's be dull and only wear neutrals" Meghan. She wore colour on the red carpet, not sure why she has now adopted a beige, black boring look. I do realize the coat is navy and hunter green, but it is so dark, it might just as well be black.

I was very impressed. Very nice to see Meghan adopted the Black Watch tartan as a nod to the country and its military. I did the same! I had to laugh at the pony. My best friend had a Shetland pony when we were teens, and he and all his siblings at the stable where he boarded had terrible tempers. We were constantly on the alert for nips, bites, and kicks when we were around them, and being unseated in any way they could manage when we were riding them. I've heard this temperament is common to the breed. But they are adorable in their own way!

  79. The biggest statement Meghan is making with her style is that she is going to continue dressing like herself. Meghan is wearing the style of coat she's always worn these last few years living in Toronto. She's wearing the same style black outfits in these Royal professional settings as she did previously in professional settings, particularly when doing interviews about her charity work. She's continued to wear her existing jewelry and other items like the trousers she wore today. Meghan is well aware of her fashion choices and tailoring. She's been on a major network news programs giving fashion advice. Her fashion opinions are all recorded on video. This isn't an uncertain girl in need of a stylist. This is a woman making fashion choices, and choosing to be herself. And in Meghan's case being herself is certainly good enough. I remember one of the girls from the Reprezent in Brixton being interviewed about the experience meeting Meghan. She said I don't know what I was expecting, but I saw her and thought I want to look like that. If Meghan is hoping to inspire anyone with her fashion choices it is young girls like her with professional ambitions. I believe Meghan is inspirational, but also accessible for young girls.

  80. I think she's doing a wonderful job so far. I especially like to hear she's been making off the radar visits to charities. She looks like she's becoming more comfortable and from the videos it seems she was personable and in the moment with the ppl she met. Excited for the next Harry + Meghan outing. Anyone know when that'll be?

  81. I like the individual pieces very much but I, too, think the pants are a bit too long and the coat length appears to be "confining" the flare of the pants.

  82. I am the first person to defend Meghan's fashion choices, but like others, I thought today's pants were too long, and too wide for the length of the coat. I liked them on their own, though. A long, straight-legged pant with a chunkier heel would have grounded the look better for me.

Great to see another engagement, though, and continue to get to know these two as a couple!

  83. Meghan looks very happy and is always engaged with the people she talks to, which is lovely. I still think the clothes look to big, but maybe she can use all those coats when she is pregnant ;-). Whilst I am nota fan of the cut, the pattern of the coat is entirely appropriate, and one of my all time favourite tartans, classic and classy. The pants look amazing without the coat, but I don't like the hem, it looks almost frayed(?). Maybe slimmer pants and ankle boots would have looked better with the big coat.. Just nitpicking.. sorry.. I would love to know what shoes Meghan is wearing, and why she chose not to wear earrings today. I am very jealous that they are in Scotland, I would love to go too!
